After previewing custom AI chatbots known as Gemini Gems at Google I/O 2024, Google has officially rolled out the feature. Gemini Gems are personalized chatbots you can create and tailor for various tasks such as fitness coaching, coding assistance, translation, and more similar to custom GPTs on ChatGPT.
However, the feature requires a Gemini Advanced subscription, priced at $20 per month, to build and use these custom Gems. Google has already introduced a few pre-made Gems, including Brainstormer for generating ideas, Career Guide for career planning, Coding Partner for coding help, Learning Coach for mastering new concepts, and Writing Editor for enhancing your writing skills.
If the pre-made Gems don’t meet your needs, you can create a custom one tailored specifically for you. However, there is a limitation Gemini Gems only permits the addition of custom instructions. Unfortunately, there’s no option to upload files, which would have enhanced the chatbot with knowledge beyond the LLM’s training data, making it more personalized and specific to your use case.
In contrast, OpenAI’s custom GPTs allow file uploads, enabling the chatbot to leverage personal data for answering queries. Still, if you’re interested in building your own custom Gems on Gemini, follow these steps.
How to Build a Custom Gemini AI Chatbot
Ensure that you have an active subscription to Gemini Advanced, as Gems is a premium feature exclusively available to paying users.
1. Navigate to the Gem Manager on the Gemini website and select “New Gem.”
2. Next, assign a name to your custom Gem and input your custom instructions in the field provided below.
3. For instance, if you’re creating a custom Gem specialized in dietary management for weight loss, you might include the following custom instructions:
You are an expert nutritionist in weight loss. Follow the best global guidance on maintaining balanced diet that reduces weight gradually. Focus on calorie intake, meal timing, portion control, and overall lifestyle. I am from India and my current weight is 98 kg. My BMI is 30.
4. Before finalizing your custom chatbot, you can interact with it to test its responses. Once you’re satisfied with the adjustments, click “Save” to complete the process.
5. You can now engage with your custom Gem anytime you wish on Gemini.
