CD Projekt Red has officially announced that pre-production on Cyberpunk 2 is underway. The update was shared in the studio’s latest financial report for 2025. Previously referred to as Project Orion, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 has now advanced beyond the early concept phase. While “Cyberpunk 2” may not be the game’s final title, it’s the name the studio is currently using in public communications.

Cyberpunk 2 Pre-Production Starts With 96 Devs

At present, 96 developers are dedicated to working on Cyberpunk 2, while more than 400 are focused on The Witcher 4. CD Projekt emphasized that Cyberpunk 2 will be their next big project following the completion of the Witcher series. A recent company slide revealed how their teams are divided across these major projects behind the scenes.

In the same update, CD Projekt announced that Phantom Liberty has surpassed 10 million copies sold since its 2023 launch, highlighting the ongoing strong interest in the Cyberpunk universe. Although Cyberpunk 2 is still in pre-production, the development team has begun working on concepts, prototypes, and plans for the future.

Cyberpunk’s creator, Mike Pondsmith, also shared an exciting teaser: besides revisiting Night City, Cyberpunk 2 will introduce a second setting. He described this new location as a dark, gritty city with a “Chicago gone wrong” atmosphere.

Don’t Hold Your Breath for Cyberpunk 2 Just Yet

Despite the excitement, Cyberpunk 2 is still several years from hitting the shelves. CD Projekt’s leadership noted that their usual development timeline from pre-production to release spans four to five years, which could mean a launch around 2030 or beyond. With GTA 6 set to release in 2026, CD Projekt RED will likely aim to claim the spotlight once Rockstar’s latest game has been out for at least four years.

Even though Cyberpunk 2 is still in pre-production, it marks a major milestone for both the studio and Night City fans. The sequel is officially happening, development is in motion, and for now, it goes by the name Cyberpunk 2.
