If you’re a fan of Cyberpunk, you’re likely already aware of the upcoming sequel to the iconic open-world game. While the original gave us the unforgettable Night City, the sequel promises to go even further. CD Projekt Red’s next installment, currently codenamed Project Orion, aims to expand the Cyberpunk universe beyond Night City. Mike Pondsmith, creator of the Cyberpunk 2077 tabletop RPG, revealed that the sequel will introduce a second city described as “more like Chicago gone wrong.”
Pondsmith made this statement during a Digital Dragons 2025 interview on the tvgry YouTube channel. Known for his significant role in shaping the world, characters, and mechanics of Cyberpunk 2077, it’s clear that he will be heavily involved in the development of Project Orion as well.
Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Will Feature Multiple Cities
According to Pondsmith, while Night City will still play a key role, the new metropolis will offer a different vibe, moving away from the Blade Runner-inspired aesthetic. His remarks hint at a grittier urban setting, possibly influenced by Chicago’s architecture and cultural backdrop.
This reveal seemed more like an unintentional slip, as Pondsmith mentioned in the interview that he had an extended conversation with one of the environment artists at CDPR. He followed up by saying:
“He was explaining how the new place in Project Orion looks, because there is another city we visit. I’m not telling you any more than that. But there is another city we visit. Night City is still there. But I remember looking at that and going, yeah, I understand the feel you are going for, and this really works.”
In the same interview, Pondsmith elaborated further, describing the new city as having a “Chicago gone wrong” feel. This opens up the possibility of a major expansion or DLC similar to Phantom Liberty. However, he quickly added, “I am not saying more than that,” leaving fans with more questions than answers. Currently, Project Orion is still in the early concept phase, with CD Projekt Red’s teams in Boston and Vancouver spearheading development.
That means plenty could still change before the game reaches players. Even so, it’s clear the developers aim to build on what made Cyberpunk 2077 stand out—this time by introducing a brand-new, corrupted city. As a fan, I’m eager to see how this new location fits into a world so defined by Night City. It’ll be exciting to watch how CDPR weaves multiple distinct settings into a single, cohesive game.
Fans have been speculating about this new setting ever since spotting in-game posters advertising a Transcontinental Maglev Network linking Night City to Chicago, scheduled to open in 2080. This clue offers a glimpse into the potential timeline and location for the sequel.
