WhatsApp Channels Expand to India and Other Countries

In June, WhatsApp introduced Channels, expanding upon a concept it initially launched on Instagram earlier in the year. This feature allows users to access information on topics of their interest and is now available in 150 countries, including India. Let’s delve into the specifics.

WhatsApp Channels Launched in India

WhatsApp Channels offer a convenient way to stay informed about a wide range of topics. Organizations and content creators can create Channels to securely share updates with multiple individuals. The new Updates section, which replaces the Status section, will display both Status and Channel updates.

To protect your privacy, your profile picture and contact details won’t be shared with other Channel members, and you won’t be able to take screenshots of the updates. Additionally, Channel Admins have the authority to manage who can join their Channels and whether they should be discoverable.

WhatsApp is introducing a searchable directory that simplifies the process of discovering Channels relevant to different topics in your country. It’s important to note that, unlike other WhatsApp features, this feature doesn’t provide end-to-end encryption as it’s designed for one-way communication.

In India, prominent figures like the BCCI have launched the Indian Cricket Team Channel, and various celebrities such as Katrina Kaif, Diljit Dosanjh, Akshay Kumar, Vijay Deverakonda, and Neha Kakkar have also created their own Channels.

Furthermore, WhatsApp Channels will incorporate reaction options that allow you to respond to the updates. If you attempt to forward these updates to other Chats and Groups, a link to the Channel will be included to expand its reach. Admins will also soon gain the ability to edit the updates they send, within a 30-day timeframe.

This new WhatsApp feature will be gradually rolled out to all users in the upcoming weeks. We encourage you to stay updated and share your thoughts on this development in the comments section below.
