Discord has unveiled a new in-app currency called Orbs, expanding on its recently introduced promotional quests feature. While users could previously earn and redeem avatar decorations and profile effects, Orbs will now allow them to unlock exclusive badges and even claim a limited-time Discord Nitro subscription.
In a recent blog post, Discord introduced Orbs a new in-app currency currently in beta testing with a limited group of users worldwide. Similar to promotional quests, users can earn Orbs by engaging with advertiser content. These Orbs can then be used to unlock exclusive items like Nitro credits, profile cosmetics, and other first-party Shop rewards all without needing to add a payment method.
This new system offers a great opportunity for new Discord users to experience the subscription without spending money upfront. It also simplifies things for advertisers, who no longer need to create custom rewards for their campaigns. Since users are already motivated to collect Orbs for perks like Discord Nitro or other exclusive items, campaigns become easier to launch and more appealing.
Prior to the launch of Orbs, advertisers needed to create custom Discord cosmetics to entice users to join promotional quests. Now, with the Orbs beta rolling out, selected users will receive a notification letting them know they’re in. We checked our own accounts and, fortunately, we were on the early access list.
