Carl Pei and the Nothing team have been hinting at the upcoming version of Nothing OS for the past few months, with a closed beta launching just a few weeks ago. Until now, details remained under wraps, but today Carl Pei unveiled the first official look at Nothing OS 3.0 during the launch of the Nothing Ear (open). Let’s explore the announced features and the release date.
Nothing OS 3.0: New Features and Changes
In terms of updates, the OS has been refined with improved integration of the N-dot font. A new animation engine powers the dot matrix effects throughout the user interface, as showcased in the lock screen and weather app demonstrations.
Regarding the lock screen, it now offers enhanced customization options. Users can easily toggle between different clock styles or opt to remove the clock entirely in favor of widgets. Among the new clock faces is a distinctive stretched analog design that adds a unique and tasteful touch.
The quick settings have undergone a significant redesign, optimizing space usage and allowing users to adjust the size of the toggles, akin to iOS 18. Additionally, a highly requested auto-brightness toggle has been integrated into the brightness slider.
The new app drawer allows users to pin apps at the top for quicker access, showcasing smart design by the Nothing team. For a more organized layout, you can switch to the Smart Drawer, which automatically categorizes apps into different groups.
Carl also introduced a new countdown timer widget designed to help users track events in real time. Additionally, you can now share widgets with friends for a collaborative experience, complete with the option to add stickers before sharing. However, it’s unclear whether this feature will be limited to Nothing devices or compatible with others as well.
Next, we got our first look at the new Nothing Gallery app, which promises to reduce processing times by 25%. This app will also track your key moments using AI, highlighting these significant moments by isolating the main object for easy identification.
Finally, they discussed upcoming features such as AI Upscaling and Super Resolution, which will function similarly to the Pixel 9’s Zoom to Enhance feature by using AI to enhance image details when zooming in. Additionally, AI image generation is also in development, akin to the capabilities offered by Pixel Studio.
Nothing OS 3.0: Release Date
Before the livestream concluded, Carl mentioned the timeline for these updates. The open beta for Nothing OS 3.0 is set to begin this October, with the public release expected to start in December.
While no specific dates were provided, it’s likely that the beta will kick off around the launch of Android 15. The update appears to be nearing completion, and the team may be waiting for Android 15’s release to ensure compatibility and address any last-minute bugs before rolling it out. Additionally, we caught a glimpse of the Nothing Phone (3) as an Easter egg during the demonstration of one of the upcoming features.
Overall, it seems like an exciting month ahead for Nothing fans. Which of these new features are you most eager to try out? Let us know in the comments!
