Direct Messages (DMs) have been a feature on X (formerly Twitter) for over a decade, and users have long requested the ability to edit messages, similar to the option for editing posts. While message editing arrived earlier, it has now been introduced for DMs in a recent update.
Mike (@cambridgemike), an engineer at X, shared a post about this new feature, which was then officially announced by X’s account. Currently, the editing feature is available only on the iOS version of the app, but the good news is that it’s free for all users no X Premium subscription required. Here’s how it works.
How to Edit Messages on X
You can now edit any of your previous messages on X using the Edit Messages feature. Here’s how:
- Tap the Messages tab in the bottom right corner of the X app.
- Open the chat with the message you want to edit.
- Locate and long-press the message you wish to modify.
- From the popup menu, select “Edit message.”
- Rewrite your message and then tap the Send button to save the changes.
Rewritten messages will show an “Edited” label underneath, making it less discreet compared to Snapchat’s editing feature. Although you can edit older messages, X will retain the original message data for security reasons. There’s also a limit on the number of times you can edit a message; currently, you can make up to five edits per message, similar to posts on the platform.
This new feature brings the app in line with other platforms that already offer message editing. For those of you who sometimes send edgy DMs and later regret them, this addition will likely be quite useful. We hope it becomes available for Android soon as well.
