Touchscreen MacBooks Still a Possibility: Apple

When Apple launched the new iPad Pro featuring the M4 chip, many users criticized the device as being excessive due to the powerful M4 chip combined with the underwhelming capabilities of iPadOS. I also believe that iPadOS limits the potential of the new M4 iPad Pro. Some users have even called on Apple to release iPads running macOS. Fans who appreciate the functionality and versatility of macOS often request Apple to develop MacBooks with touchscreen capabilities. Apple has indicated that it is not entirely opposed to this idea, suggesting that we might see a touchscreen MacBook in the future.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Apple’s Vice President of iPad and Mac product marketing, Tom Boger, discussed how the new iPad compares to the Mac and addressed the possibility of a touchscreen Mac.

Tom Boger clarified that Apple does not view the two devices as competitors. Instead, he stated that the Mac and iPad are “complementary” to each other. He described the iPad as a “touch-first device,” whereas the Mac is designed for “indirect manipulation.”

While Tom Boger was discussing the iPad and Mac, the inevitable question arose: Will Apple ever release a touchscreen Mac? Joanna Stern from The Wall Street Journal persistently tried to extract an answer or even a hint from Boger.

Boger elaborated that many users own both devices and view the iPad “as an extension” of the Mac. He highlighted that with Apple’s Continuity feature, users can seamlessly work across devices. The iPad provides touchscreen controls for several macOS apps, while a computer offers unique features and greater power.

To probe further into Apple’s plans for a touchscreen Mac, Joanna asked if Apple might ever change its stance. Boger replied, “I can’t say we never change our mind.”

From Boger’s reply, it’s possible to infer that Apple might consider developing a touchscreen MacBook in the future. After all, many Windows-based laptops have touchscreens, giving users the freedom to choose whether to use it or not. It would be interesting to see a MacBook with a touchscreen as an additional interaction option. Although the chances seem slim, a touchscreen MacBook remains a possibility.

Previously, Mark Gurman reported that Apple is diligently working on developing a touchscreen MacBook, aiming for a 2025 release date. The tech giant is expected to maintain a “traditional laptop design” with a standard keyboard and trackpad, even if the device materializes.

Gurman added that the screen would “support touch input and gestures, just like an iPhone and iPad.” Besides touch-based Macs, Apple might also introduce a foldable iPhone in 2026.

We may receive more concrete details about Apple’s touchscreen Mac plans in the coming months. We’ll ensure you stay informed as any new developments come to light. Stay tuned!
