Pixel 9 Aims to Resolve Connectivity Issues with New Exynos Modem

We’re still months away from the Pixel 9 unveiling, but leaks are already spoiling some surprises! High-resolution images of the phone have surfaced, and recent updates to the Android 15 Beta hint at a game-changer: satellite connectivity. This innovative feature could let you ditch the internet and still stay connected.

Leaked info hints that the Pixel 9 might ditch its connectivity woes entirely. It seems they’re adopting a new Exynos modem, which not only paves the way for satellite messaging (a feature gleaned from recent Android 15 betas) but could also address those pesky connection problems that plagued past Pixel phones. This new modem equips the Pixel 9 series for satellite connectivity right out of the box.

Pixel enthusiasts, rejoice! Reliable tipster Kamila Wojciechowska has inside information about the upcoming Pixel 9 series. Google is reportedly ditching the old modem and equipping the Pixel 9 lineup with the all-new Exynos 5400. This upgraded modem accompanies the next-gen Tensor G4 chip and promises improvements over previous generations.

Reportedly, the new Exynos modem boasts enhanced power efficiency and speed. Additionally, Kamila indicates that the software stack has been upgraded to support 3GPP Rel. 17. potentially enabling connectivity with 5G non-terrestrial networks, such as satellite connections.

Kamila’s source also hints at the development of a 5G Pixel Tablet, codenamed “Clementine“, which may feature the Exynos 5400 modem, possibly alongside the upcoming Pixel Fold 2.

Regarding the potential functionality of satellite connectivity once available, the Pixel may prompt users with a series of questions. Users would then be able to message their emergency contacts and emergency services. The questions would have predefined answers to facilitate a swift process. Examples of questions include “What happened?“, “Are there weapons involved?“, “What type of vehicle or vessel?“, and more.

Google has incorporated animations to simplify the process of aiming devices in the required direction for satellite connectivity.

Satellite connectivity will join Android’s expanding array of safety features. Google is making significant changes on both the software and hardware fronts. Notably, a third Pixel 9 variant has been revealed, suggesting the possibility of a Pixel 9 Pro XL. Meanwhile, anticipation builds for the upcoming Google I/O, where the Pixel 8a is expected to be showcased.
