ChatGPT Search Engine Expected to Launch on Monday, Ahead of Google I/O

Earlier reports indicated that OpenAI was set to launch its ChatGPT search engine, positioning it as an alternative to Google Search, on May 9. However, no event was held as expected, and visiting search.chatgpt.com still shows a “Not found” message. Now, a new report from Reuters suggests that OpenAI’s search engine is slated to launch on May 13, just one day before the Google I/O event.

According to the report, OpenAI’s search product will serve as an extension of ChatGPT, providing real-time information from the web. The new search engine will also incorporate citations from a variety of sources.

Upon further examination of the subdomain, it appears that the launch is imminent. The subdomain now redirects to search.chatgpt.com/search (visit), indicating that preparations for the launch are in their final stages. Additionally, both Bing and DuckDuckGo have indexed the subdomain page, which was not the case previously. The indexed URL suggests that there will be a feed on the homepage featuring recommended articles.

With OpenAI’s search engine, the Microsoft-backed startup is positioned to challenge Google in the search engine market. While the transition from Google to other search engines may not happen immediately, the presence of a strong competitor in the space will keep Google on its toes. Currently, Google holds a market share of nearly 91%, with Bing accounting for only 3.64% of the market.

In essence, Google enjoys a monopoly in the search engine market, making the emergence of a new competitor welcome news for consumers. While Google is also integrating AI into Search, known as Search Generative Experience, it is prone to generating incorrect information at times.

Furthermore, OpenAI’s search engine is likely to impact Perplexity, which serves as a Google Search alternative by providing various citations from the web for its answers. The launch of OpenAI’s search engine is eagerly anticipated, and we will have to wait until Monday to see what it has in store.
