Android 15 Developer Preview 1 Now Available

It might not seem like much time has elapsed since Android 14‘s launch, and that’s accurate; it’s only been four months. Google is now rolling out the first Developer Preview of its upcoming Android iteration, Android 15, in February. Although this update doesn’t introduce substantial alterations, it sets the stage for forthcoming Developer Preview iterations and Betas. Here’s a comprehensive overview of Android 15 Developer Preview 1.

Android 15 Developer Preview 1 Release Notes

In DP1 of Android 15, Google prioritizes Privacy and Security enhancements. This includes updates such as the latest AdServices module with Privacy Sandbox APIs, additions to the File Integrity Manager class from Linux Kernel’s fs-verity feature, and the introduction of Partial Screen Sharing. Here’s a comprehensive changelog detailing all the new features and changes in Android 15 DP1.

  • Updated AdServices module integrating Privacy Sandbox APIs.
  • Enhanced FileIntegrityManager class with additional APIs from Linux Kernel’s fs-verity feature.
  • Introduction of Partial Screen Sharing functionality.
  • Implementation of a new Camera2 API allowing apps to increase the brightness of the camera preview.
  • Enhancement of the Android Dynamic Performance Framework with a new power-efficiency mode, enabling apps to prioritize power-saving over performance, adjusting CPU/GPU frequencies accordingly.
  • Addition of new OpenJDK APIs concerning NIO buffers, streams, security, and other functionalities.
  • Inclusion of a keyboard vibration toggle in settings.
  • Notification cooldown feature: lowers notification volume when receiving multiple notifications from the same app simultaneously.

If Google sticks to the pattern established with Android 14 Developer Previews and Betas, we can expect two Developer Previews and five Betas. Additionally, Google might release hotfixes to address any significant bugs, given that Developer Previews and Betas typically contain numerous bugs and app crashes.

Android 15 is projected to achieve Platform Stability by June 2024, with testing concluding by October, culminating in the release of the stable build by Google. Regarding upcoming features, it’s premature to speculate. However, you can explore our wishlist of desired features for Android 15.
