Fortnite Maker Epic Games Faces Alleged Hack; Developer Denies Claims

It’s disheartening how frequently we cover stories of hacks and layoffs in the gaming industry. Unfortunately, data breaches by ransomware groups have become all too common. Following major breaches at Rockstar Games and more recently at Insomniac Games, it appears that Epic Games is now the latest target. According to reports from CyberDaily, a group known as Mogilevich claims to have successfully breached the security of the popular Fortnite developer.

As per the report, Mogilevich has “allegedly conducted a covert attack on Epic Games’ servers“. The group asserts possession of 189 gigabytes of data, “encompassing emails, passwords, full names, payment details, source code, and various other information.”

The data is now being offered for sale, as indicated by the message posted on the website. Additionally, there’s a hyperlink that reads, “If you are affiliated with the company or interested in purchasing the data, click on me.”

The group has set a deadline of March 4 for Epic Games to purchase the data, with no specified price mentioned. Notably, Mogilevich has not provided any proof of the hack, unlike Rhysida did during the Insomniac Games breach last year.

Epic Games’ Official Statement

In the most recent development, VGC has received a response from Epic Games regarding this issue. In their official statement, Epic Games states:

Expanding on the topic, Epic Games elaborates, “The only communication resembling a response we’ve encountered is a tweet supposedly requesting $15k along with proof of funds in exchange for the alleged data.”

Insomniac Games promptly addressed the data breach through its social media channels, whereas Epic Games did not immediately respond to the incident. Epic Games, renowned for creating Fortnite and its digital storefront, is notably silent on the matter.

Additionally, the publisher has been actively involved in collaborative endeavours to advance the gaming industry. With a significant collaboration with Disney currently in progress, the occurrence of a data breach could prove to be a setback for the company.

Yet another ransomware attack underscores the relentless nature of hackers. What are your thoughts on this latest data breach? Share your opinions in the comments section below.
