Discord Confirms Exposure Of 70,000 Users’ Government ID Photos In Security Incident

If you’ve submitted a government-issued ID for age verification on Discord, your personal information might be at risk. The popular community and gaming platform revealed that approximately 70,000 users’ passports, photo IDs, and credit card information were accessed by hackers.

In a press statement last week, Discord explained that a third-party customer support service was targeted by an unauthorized actor aiming to demand a financial ransom through access to user data.

How Discord Is Addressing the Breach

The compromised information includes users’ names, Discord usernames, email addresses, IP addresses, other contact details, as well as the last four digits of credit card numbers and purchase history. Discord spokesperson Nu Wexler told The Verge that around 70,000 users’ government-issued ID images—used by a vendor to verify age-related appeals—may have been exposed.

Discord assured users in its statement that it is actively reaching out to those affected: “We are in the process of contacting impacted users. If you were impacted, you will receive an email from noreply@discord.com.” The company also urged users to remain cautious of suspicious messages or communications.

This incident has sparked criticism regarding government age verification requirements, which compel users to submit photo IDs. Many users are now questioning the security practices of platforms that handle such sensitive data, emphasizing the risks to privacy and personal information.
