As anticipated, Apple has officially unveiled its highly awaited device the Apple Vision Pro, a mixed-reality wearable set to revolutionize augmented reality technology and compete with Meta’s Quest headset. Powered by VisionOS, this new AR/VR headset is described by Apple as a spatial computer that seamlessly blends the digital and physical worlds. Here are the details.

Apple Vision Pro: Specs & Features

The Apple Vision Pro resembles ski goggles, featuring a glass front and an aluminum frame. Each eye is equipped with two 4K micro-OLED displays, offering a total of 23 million pixels across both screens. The headset is equipped with a digital crown that enables users to seamlessly toggle between augmented reality and a fully immersive experience.

Additionally, the Vision Pro is equipped with a new Spatial Audio system developed by Apple. Dual-driver audio pods are located at each ear, providing a personalized spatial audio experience. The device employs audio ray tracing technology to map the surrounding environment and adjust the sound accordingly.

At the front of the Vision Pro is a new display system called “EyeSight.” This feature is designed to create a sense of connection while using the headset. EyeSight transforms the display into a transparent view when someone approaches the wearer, allowing the other person to see the user’s eyes and facilitating effective communication. When the user is immersed in an experience, EyeSight shifts to a glowing screen to inform those nearby.

The Vision Pro is powered by the M2 chip, complemented by a new R1 chip that streams images from an array of sensors to the main displays in just 12 milliseconds, eight times quicker than a blink of an eye!

To authenticate users, Apple has introduced a new biometric system called Optic ID, which uses the iris for identification. Optic ID functions similarly to Face ID, ensuring secure access. According to Apple, the Optic ID data is encrypted and not shared with third-party applications.

VisionOS: Apple’s First Spatial Operating System

The Vision Pro operates on VisionOS, Apple’s new spatial operating system designed to enhance the immersive experience. It allows users to display multiple apps simultaneously, resize them, and arrange them on an infinite canvas, all while interacting through a virtual keyboard or voice dictation.

When connected to a power source, the Vision Pro can function all day, while its external battery provides up to two hours of use. Unlike many competitor devices, the Vision Pro doesn’t utilize controllers; instead, it is entirely controlled through hand gestures, eye movements, and voice commands. Additionally, there’s a new App Store specifically for easy access to compatible applications.

Price and Availability

Apple has set the price of the Vision Pro at $3,499 (approximately Rs 2,88,000), making it a premium device, and it is expected to be available in the U.S. early next year.
