Apple has unveiled adoption figures for iOS 17 for the first time, revealing that it’s installed on 76% of iPhones introduced in the last four years. The data, sourced from devices that made transactions on the App Store until February 4, 2024, was disclosed on Apple’s Developer website. This data, reported by Macrumors, suggests that iOS 17 adoption is trailing behind that of iOS 16.
According to Apple, the adoption breakdown for iOS 17 is as follows:
All the iPhones released in the last four years:
- iOS 17: 76%
- iOS 16: 20%
- Earlier: 4%
Of all iPhones:
- iOS 17: 66%
- iOS 16: 23%
- Earlier: 11%
According to Apple’s data, the adoption of iOS 17 has been slower compared to iOS 16. By this time last year, iOS was running on 81% of modern iPhones and 72% of all iPhones.
Apple also shared adoption numbers for iPadOS 17. Among iPads launched in the last four years, 61% are running iPadOS 17, 29% have iPadOS 16, and 10% are on an older version. Out of all currently active iPads, 53% are operating on iPadOS 17, 29% have upgraded to iPadOS 16, and 18% are still utilizing an earlier version of the software.
Interestingly, the adoption rate of iPadOS 17 is faster than that of iPadOS 16. In February 2023, only 53% of modern iPads and 50% of all iPads were running iPadOS 16, indicating that iPadOS 17 is surpassing its predecessor.
Despite offering features like NameDrop and Contact Posters, iOS 17 seems to have a slower adoption rate than expected. However, it’s anticipated that this trend will change with iOS 18, which is rumored to be the biggest software update in Apple’s history. The upcoming iOS 18 is expected to introduce significant enhancements, potentially leveraging generative AI technology.
Apple released the stable, public version of iOS 17 in September 2023. Since then, the company has rolled out three major updates, with the fourth major update, iOS 17.4, scheduled for release in March.
