In just under two weeks, Apple will unveil iOS 18 and its anticipated AI features at WWDC24. As Apple’s own AI capabilities may still be developing, the company is reportedly turning to third-party partnerships to enhance these smart features. Notably, OpenAI’s ChatGPT could be powering Siri and other AI functionalities in iOS 18, which has raised concerns at Microsoft.
According to The Information, Apple has tested a version of Siri that leverages ChatGPT’s advanced capabilities. With Apple not yet ready to launch its own chatbot, it appears the company is relying on third-party solutions for now. Meanwhile, Apple is expected to use its own language models for less intensive features, like on-device summarization.
This potential collaboration between Apple and OpenAI is causing unease at Microsoft, given that OpenAI’s services depend on its servers. The influx of Apple users could strain Microsoft’s data centers, which already support over 2.2 billion active Apple devices. Moreover, Microsoft faces the challenge of competing with the AI features Apple integrates into its ecosystem.
WWDC24 starts on June 10, where Apple is set to announce iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15, and watchOS 11. We look forward to learning more about the significant AI advancements Apple has in store.
