Durin in Genshin Impact: Character Backstory and Lore Explained

Genshin Impact’s world is home to a variety of mystical beings, with dragons standing out as some of the most ancient and powerful creatures in Teyvat. These native rulers were eventually wiped out following the arrival of outsiders. Among them, Durin is unique not a natural dragon, but an artificial lifeform known as a humus. With the Version 5.6 Archon Quest “Paralogism” shining a spotlight on both Durin and Albedo, it’s the perfect moment to revisit Durin’s backstory and significance in the game.

Who is Durin in Genshin Impact?

Durin, a mysterious creature known as a shadow dragon or by his original name, Humus was engineered by Rhinedottir of Khaenri’ah roughly five centuries ago amid the chaos of the cataclysm. His body carried Abyssal energy so toxic it tainted everything it came into contact with.

When the cataclysm unfolded, Durin descended upon Mondstadt, posing a grave threat. To stop him, the Anemo Archon Barbatos (now known as Venti) and the wind dragon Dvalin joined forces to defeat him. Interestingly, Durin wasn’t inherently evil; he harbored a gentle spirit but was tragically unaware that his very existence brought ruin.

In his mind, Durin imagined a peaceful world him dancing and celebrating alongside Dvalin and the people of Mondstadt. In reality, he was laying waste to the city. After being vanquished by Dvalin, his remains fell onto Dragonspine, where his story faded into legend.

Durin’s distorted blood circulated into the Ley Lines of Dragonspine, bestiring the Frostbearing Tree. Although his body perished, his heart remained alive, and his residual life force spread across the valley.

In time, Durin’s corrupted core began giving rise to eerie lifeforms shapeshifting monsters capable of mimicking human appearance. These creatures managed to infiltrate Mondstadt and attempted to frame Albedo for a crime he didn’t commit. However, Albedo had already anticipated their move and laid a carefully planned trap with the support of the Knights of Favonius.

Ultimately, Albedo extracted Durin’s heart core and used its energy to turn Mini Durin into a human, bringing Durin back in a gentler, more peaceful form.

Durin’s Return as a Human: Genshin Impact 5.6 Lore Breakdown

In Genshin Impact 5.6’s Archon Quest “Paralogism,” Albedo uses Durin’s core to turn Mini Durin into a human figure, marking a key plot twist.

Durin’s heart, buried deep in Dragonspine, has been slowly recovering and spreading its corruption. Knowing that dragons never truly die and eventually revive, Albedo foresaw that Durin’s return in full force was inevitable. Instead of waiting for that disaster, he took a different route.

To revive Durin, Albedo chose to rely on Mini Durin a calm and harmless imitation of the original dragon created by Andersdotter. Unlike his predecessor, Mini Durin possessed a kind disposition and even shrank himself to avoid alarming the people of Simulanka.

Albedo believed that if Durin were to come back, anchoring him with Mini Durin’s good-hearted nature could suppress his dangerous side. To ensure he wouldn’t pose a threat in the future, Albedo took things further by using alchemy to give this new version of Durin a human form.

With this transformation, Albedo not only prevented a catastrophic resurrection but also gave Durin a chance at a peaceful life one far different from his original fate.

That’s everything we know so far about Durin’s resurrection in Genshin Impact 5.6. His transformation leaves fans wondering: Could this new human version of Durin join the roster of playable characters? Let us know in the comments below!
