Jack Dorsey’s ‘start small’ campaign invests $21M in OpenSats for Bitcoin development

In a blog post on May 4, the nonprofit revealed Dorsey’s donation, stating the funds would enhance resources for open-source projects, offering vital support to innovators worldwide.

Dorsey, formerly CEO of Twitter (now X) from 2015 to 2021, verified the donation in response to a post by technology specialist and whistleblower Edward Snowden. Snowden had cautioned Bitcoin developers about the necessity of integrating privacy measures at the protocol level.

In addition to backing open-source projects, Dorsey’s donation designates funds for legal defense for Bitcoin developers. This underscores the Square CEO’s ongoing support for the Bitcoin community and his conviction in its capacity to transform finance and technology.

OpenSats announced allocating $15 million to its General Fund, $5 million to the Nostr Fund, and $1 million to operational budgets.

The General Fund consists of contributions from individuals and organizations, dedicated to supporting free and open-source Bitcoin projects and contributors.

The Nostr fund backs the advancement of Nostr, a decentralized social network employing relays for messaging. The platform has surged in popularity, boasting 16 million users, with half a million logging in daily.

OpenSats has a track record of endorsing various initiatives to broaden the scope of the Bitcoin ecosystem and other open-source ventures. They have previously backed 21 teams, including BTCPay Server, enabling users to process payments on their own servers, and the Bitcoin Policy Institute.

OpenSats encouraged open-source developers seeking funding not to hesitate in applying. The organization invites developers worldwide to seize this opportunity by visiting opensats.org/apply.
