Google continues its innovation streak by integrating AI-driven functionalities across its platforms. From Gmail and Docs’ “Help me write” feature to Google Keep’s “Create a list” tool, the tech giant consistently introduces user-friendly AI tools. Now, YouTube joins the lineup with its own AI-powered chatbot accessible via an “Ask” button.
The Ask button enables interaction with a chatbot, allowing viewers to ask questions about the video and receive immediate responses without pausing it. You can request a summary, discuss specific sections, inquire about the pros and cons of a product in reviews, or get educational content translated into simpler language.
According to Android Authority, the feature demonstrates impressive responsiveness and accuracy in its responses. This suggests that the AI might be analyzing the video content beforehand. Notably, the Ask button is unavailable for videos not entirely in English, hinting at its language limitations.
Currently, this feature is exclusive to YouTube Premium users aged 18 and above in the US. It’s accessible via the YouTube app for Android until May 1st, provided you enable the experimental feature in Settings. However, it’s important to note that it only functions with English-language videos and does not support music videos.
We’ve encountered AI tools and browser extensions in the past that allowed us to summarize or ask questions about videos. However, having this capability directly in the app is far more convenient. I believe it will garner significant interest once it’s available to a broader user base, particularly among students who could use it to condense lengthy lectures.
On the flip side, I have reservations about how this feature might impact video watch times. Users might resort to asking the AI for specific information and then promptly close the video. This is a concern that YouTube and Google need to address, given its potential negative impact on content creators. What are your thoughts on YouTube’s new AI chatbot?
