WhatsApp, boasting over 3 billion monthly active users, has cemented itself as the go-to communication tool globally, akin to iMessage. However, this widespread usage has also turned the app into a breeding ground for spam and the dissemination of fake news. In response, WhatsApp is implementing restrictions that will prevent users from initiating new chats if they exhibit abusive or spam-like behavior, aiming to combat these issues effectively.
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is currently testing a feature in its latest Android Beta version 2.24.10.5 update that limits users from starting new chats. This restriction, implemented as a penalty for specific violations on the platform, remains in effect for an unspecified duration. A screenshot reveals that attempting to initiate a new conversation triggers a pop-up message stating, “Your account is restricted right now.”
WABetaInfo explained that WhatsApp employs automated tools to detect spam-like behavior, bulk messaging, and other violations of its terms of service. Importantly, these tools don’t compromise your privacy as they don’t read your messages; instead, they analyze patterns to identify suspicious activities.
Furthermore, the restriction imposed by this feature only prevents you from starting new conversations. You can still respond to chats and groups that you were already involved in before the restriction was applied. Although the feature is still in development, it’s expected to be rolled out to WhatsApp users in the future.
With elections underway in some of the world’s most influential regions, a feature like this is greatly welcomed. It serves to curb the dissemination of fake news and propaganda often propagated by bots and other users. Rather than an outright ban, it offers a second chance for users to rectify their behavior and adopt a more responsible approach. Here’s hoping you won’t encounter this pop-up message on your WhatsApp!
