WhatsApp introduced the ability to send and create Avatars for more engaging and personalized conversations with contacts last year. Now, it’s anticipated that this feature is going to receive an update and expand to video calls on the Meta-owned platform. This update is expected to bring more customization and fun to video conversations on WhatsApp, allowing users to express themselves in new and creative ways during video calls.
Testing of WhatsApp Avatars on Video Calls
WhatsApp is currently testing the new beta for Android version 2.23.19.14, which includes the much-anticipated Video Avatar Calling feature. This update will enable users to use their WhatsApp Avatars during video calls, adding an element of fun and personalization to their conversations.
This feature has been in development since last year, and it appears that its official release is approaching. The Video Avatar Calling feature will be similar to the functionality already available on platforms like Apple’s FaceTime and Zoom, where users can replace their own faces with Memojis or multiple emojis, enhancing the visual and interactive aspects of video calls.
The upcoming feature of using Avatars during video calls on WhatsApp is expected to offer an interactive experience by mimicking your facial movements and expressions. An Avatar button will be conveniently placed within the calling screen, allowing users to activate it with a tap. Users will also have the option to switch back to their non-Avatar selves at any time during the call. Importantly, Video Avatar Calling will retain end-to-end encryption, ensuring the security and privacy of these interactive video calls, just like traditional video calls on WhatsApp.
Currently, this feature is in the testing phase with a select group of beta testers. It remains to be seen when it will be rolled out to a broader audience as part of a stable update. Given the common features across Meta’s platforms, it’s possible that this functionality may eventually make its way to Instagram and Messenger as well.
