Google Quietly Launches the Much Awaited Pixel 8a

While attention was focused on the new iPad Pro’s release, Google quietly launched its latest mid-range smartphone, the Pixel 8a. Despite extensive leaks before its launch, Google seemed to abandon secrecy and simply released it alongside the Pixel Tablet refresh. Now that the official details are out, we’ve listed the specifications and availability below.

Pixel 8a: Specifications and Features

The brand-new Pixel 8a brings significant improvements over its predecessors. It’s the first a-series device to feature a 120Hz refresh rate with a 6.1-inch OLED display, slightly smaller than the Pixel 8’s 6.2-inch screen. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass 3 and boasts a peak brightness of 2,000 nits, along with an under-display fingerprint scanner.

The Pixel 8a is powered by the Google Tensor G3 chipset paired with 8 GB of LPDDR5x RAM and up to 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. It also features the Titan M2 chip for security. The design language is similar to the Pixel 8, with a matte aluminum frame and an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance.

In terms of cameras, the Pixel 8a sports a 64MP primary camera, a 13MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 13MP selfie camera, similar to last year’s Pixel 7a. The phone is equipped with a 4,500 mAh battery with Qi wireless charging support. It offers Wi-Fi 6E, 5G, Bluetooth 5.3, and USB-C 3.2 connectivity. The dual stereo speaker setup provides immersive sound.

The Pixel 8a runs Android 14 out of the box and is promised to receive seven major Android updates. It includes new AI features such as Magic Editor, Audio Magic Eraser, Best Take, Circle to Search, and more. Additionally, it is expected to receive Gemini Nano on-device later.

Pixel 8a: Pricing and Availability

The Pixel 8a comes in four color options: Obsidian, Bay, Porcelain, and Aloe. The Obsidian color option is available exclusively for the 256 GB variant. Priced more competitively than the Pixel 8, the 128 GB variant is available for just $500, while the 256 GB variant is priced at $559. Best Buy is offering a $100 gift card for pre-orders placed before May 19!

In India, the Pixel 8a starts at Rs 52,999 and is exclusively available on Flipkart, where pre-orders are currently open.
