Last year, OpenAI unveiled its enhanced GPT-4 Turbo model, featuring an updated knowledge cut-off and more cost-effective usage compared to the standard GPT-4. Recently, Microsoft Copilot has made this AI model accessible to users for free, without any charges. You can now utilize it through the Microsoft Copilot website or app immediately.
Mikhail Parakhin, heading Microsoft’s Windows and Web Experiences team after Panos’ exit, revealed this update on X (previously known as Twitter) on March 12, 2024.
In his X post, Parakhin disclosed that Copilot Pro users will have the option to switch back to using only GPT-4. However, there’s a slight twist: GPT-4 Turbo isn’t constantly active by default.
Responding to a question from an X user in the comments regarding whether all three conversation modes of Copilot incorporate this feature, Mikhail stated, “Yes, but to varying degrees.” He elaborated that Creative and Precise modes are predominantly powered by GPT-4 Turbo, while Balanced mode utilizes it selectively, particularly in certain cases and for inner monologue prompts.
Previously, Copilot defaulted to using the GPT-4 model. However, it seems that going forward, it will primarily utilize GPT-4 for the “Balanced” mode only. If you predominantly operate Copilot in Balanced mode, this change may impact your user experience.
Rumors suggest that OpenAI is in the process of developing GPT-4.5 Turbo, continuing the trend of rolling out advanced models. This adjustment could be a strategic move to accommodate the integration of the more advanced model into Copilot’s Pro tier.
You might wonder, why opt for GPT-4 Turbo in the first place? Well, unlike the standard GPT-4 model with a knowledge cutoff date of September 2021, GPT-4 Turbo extends this to April 2023. This means it can provide more accurate responses for recent events and facts.
Furthermore, GPT-4 Turbo boasts a significantly expanded context window, four times larger than that of GPT-4. This enhancement allows for more comprehensive follow-up questions and larger prompts without the AI losing track.
Moreover, GPT-4 Turbo is designed to pay closer attention to the subtle nuances of your queries, ensuring it delivers precise responses. This addresses previous issues, such as GPT-4’s inability to respond accurately in certain formats like XML.
