Google Postpones Release of GPT-4 Competitor ‘Gemini AI’ to Next Year

Google introduced Bard, an alternative to ChatGPT, utilizing the PaLM 2 model, which has advanced since its launch earlier this year. In their pursuit of enhancing conversational AI with multimodal capabilities, Google announced the development of Gemini, a next-gen foundational model, at Google I/O 2023. However, reports suggest that Gemini’s release has encountered delays due to developmental challenges.

The latest report from The Information highlights setbacks in Google’s AI roadmap, which have become frequent in recent weeks. It specifically points out a significant issue with Gemini’s ability to process inputs in languages other than English. The support for multiple languages is crucial for Gemini’s success on a global scale.

At the I/O 2023 event, Google extensively discussed the PaLM 2 model and Gemini, their latest AI models. Early versions of Bard integrated with Gemini were reportedly shared for testing with select companies participating in Google Cloud. However, a recent update informed these companies of a delay, pushing the expected release to Q1 2024, indicating significant setbacks in Google’s Gemini AI development.

Conversely, OpenAI has been rapidly progressing, having integrated DALL-E 3 into ChatGPT for Plus subscribers. Furthermore, they plan to launch a personalized GPT Store next year, despite recent upheavals within OpenAI. Their roadmap and contributions to AI innovation remain robust, showcased by the unveiling of GPT 4 Turbo at the OpenAI DevDay conference. Notably, GPT 4 Turbo not only boasts cost-effectiveness but also offers enhanced features.

Following Google’s I/O 2023 devcon, there were expectations for Gemini AI to become available by the end of 2023. Reportedly, CEO Sundar Pichai had scheduled events in various locations, but these plans are now on hold due to Gemini’s unpreparedness, particularly in handling non-English queries consistently.

The current report suggests a potential launch for Google’s Gemini AI in early 2024 instead. Comparisons are drawn between Gemini and OpenAI’s GPT-4, raising curiosity about whether Gemini’s multimodal capabilities will match GPT-4’s prowess.

What do you anticipate from Google’s forthcoming Gemini AI? Could its multimodal functionality make it superior to GPT-4? Please share your thoughts in the comments section.
