Instagram’s alternative to X, Threads, has rolled out a new Ghost Posts feature that allows users to share posts that automatically disappear after 24 hours. Any replies to these ghost posts will be delivered privately to your DMs instead of appearing publicly.
How Do Ghost Posts Function on Threads?
This new addition works much like Instagram’s disappearing messages, but applies to public posts. Every ghost post is automatically archived after a day. To use it, you must toggle the ghost icon while creating a post, after which your text appears in a greyed-out box.
You’ll also find a dedicated Ghost Posts section on your Threads profile, as shown in the shared image.

In its announcement, Threads described the feature as: “Here today and gone tomorrow, encouraging users to express spontaneous thoughts freely.” It’s perfect for sharing temporary updates, exclusive announcements, or content you don’t want to keep permanently visible.

Additionally, others won’t see any public replies to your ghost posts, as all responses are sent directly to your DMs. Though a small enhancement, it’s a much-requested feature similar to what X users have wanted for years. The Ghost Posts option has been tested since April, alongside other tools like text attachments, creator insights, and hidden word filters within the app.
