First Android 15 Developer Preview Expected to Launch Tomorrow

Android Developer Previews play a crucial role in the early development stages, shaping the upcoming Android release by introducing frameworks that set the stage for significant features. Typically released in February, there’s speculation from a Google developer’s comment in an AOSP Gerrit that the Android 15 developer preview might debut as soon as tomorrow.

The initial Developer Preview for Android 14 was released on February 7. Despite expectations for Android 15 DP1 to follow suit, it did not materialize on the same date. Google has indicated plans to alter the release schedule for upcoming Android versions, potentially incorporating feature drops and even adjustments to major release timelines.

The developer mentioned considering waiting for the availability of a certain feature, “possibly implying that it would be prudent to wait until Android V becomes accessible“. They then noted that the “first Developer Preview of Android V was slated for February 15“. However, it appears that the comment has since been removed.

Regarding the features expected in Android 15 DP1, it’s wise to temper your expectations as initial developer previews of major Android versions often don’t introduce many new features. Instead, these builds tend to be laden with bugs. We advise against installing Android 15 on your primary device until it reaches at least Beta 3.

Android 15 DP1 will debut initially on Pixel devices, commencing with the Pixel 6. Here’s a list of eligible phones:

  • Pixel 6 / 6 Pro / 6a
  • Pixel 7 / 7 Pro / 7a
  • Pixel 8 / 8 Pro
  • Pixel Fold
