Sony’s WH-1000XM5 headphones set a high bar in 2022 with top-notch noise cancellation and unmatched comfort. Since then, they’ve received widespread praise with hardly any complaints. However, Sony wasn’t ready to rest on its laurels and has now launched the WH-1000XM6 the long-awaited successor that introduces a few subtle but notable updates.

Sony WH-1000XM6: What’s New and What’s Not

The most notable update in the WH-1000XM6 is the return of the folding hinge, a feature surprisingly removed from the XM5. This allows for easier storage and portability, fitting snugly into your backpack without needing extra space. Additionally, the earpads are now detachable, making replacement and cleaning much more convenient. The headphones also come with a new carrying case that uses magnets instead of traditional zippers.

That said, the WH-1000XM6 still lacks water resistance or an IP rating, just like its predecessor. This might disappoint those looking to use them by the pool or during intense workouts.

Sony has also enhanced the already impressive noise cancellation in the XM6. Equipped with the new QN3 processor and 12 microphones, these headphones offer quieter ANC and a more natural-sounding ambient mode. Sony achieved this improvement by using AI-trained models to better distinguish between human voices and environmental sounds.

The WH-1000XM6 also supports real-time upmixing of 360 spatial audio. You can control features using voice commands like “Hey headphones, noise-canceling on.” For connectivity, it offers Bluetooth 5.3 with AuraCast support and is compatible with SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3 audio codecs though AptX is still not supported.

As for battery life, the XM6 provides an additional 5.5 hours, bringing the total playback time to around 36 hours depending on usage. Charging times, however, remain unchanged.

Pricing and Availability

The Sony WH-1000XM6 will be available in Black, Platinum Silver, and a new Midnight Blue color option, priced at $449. This puts it just below the cost of the AirPods Max, making it a more affordable and arguably better alternative. That said, if you’re looking for a flagship listening experience on a budget, the older XM5s are still a great choice.
