Sony Layoffs: 900 PlayStation Employees Affected, London Division Shut Down

PlayStation, renowned for its high-budget exclusives and collective known as PlayStation Studios, is not immune to the challenges of the current market landscape. Following suit with other publishers, Sony has announced employee layoffs.

On February 27, 2024, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan revealed the news via the company’s newsroom blog. The announcement stated that 900 employees would be affected, amounting to 8% of the company’s workforce. Additionally, the closure of Sony London Studio was confirmed as part of the restructuring efforts. Ryan emphasized that these decisions were made to foster the company’s future growth and development.

Jim Ryan shared unfortunate news on X (formerly Twitter), taking sole responsibility for the workforce reduction. He emphasized that none of the top-level management bore responsibility for this decision.

Studios such as Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games, and Guerilla Games have also felt the impact of recent developments. According to a Bloomberg report, approximately 40 employees will be affected at Guerilla Games. Additionally, PlayStation has initiated the cancellation of several projects in progress, including a Twisted Metal live-service game being developed by Firesprite Studios, one of the affected development houses.

Our thoughts are with all those impacted by these layoffs at Sony, and we hope for a swift recovery for those affected. Unfortunately, despite the industry’s reputation for record-breaking profits, it is witnessing some of the highest numbers of layoffs this year, with indications of further challenges in the coming years.
