Many have speculated whether the upcoming 5 vs 5 first-person hero shooter Concord will adopt standard live-service features like a battle pass. In today’s market, full-priced live-service games typically include some form of in-game monetization. However, Sony has confirmed that Concord will not feature a battle pass, providing some relief to players.
After wrapping up its beta test, the official Concord X account (formerly Twitter) released details about the game’s future. Much of the information addressed questions about Concord’s progression system, maps, modes, and post-launch plans.
Sony’s plans for Concord include details about post-launch content, explicitly stating that the Concord will not feature a battle pass. Firewalk Studios aims to provide a fulfilling and complete experience from the start.
Mark DeRidder, gameplay animation director at Firewalk, addressed this decision in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “You own Concord; Concord doesn’t own you.”
In Concord, you won’t need a paid battle pass to earn unlockables for customizing your heroes. Instead, you can unlock these items simply by playing the game and completing matches. According to the X post, Concord will offer hundreds of items to personalize your Freegunners, which can be earned through gameplay rather than purchases. Additionally, Sony plans to introduce “new Freegunners, maps, modes, and more” after the game’s launch.
While Concord won’t feature a battle pass at launch, it’s important to note that this doesn’t rule out the possibility of one being introduced later. Many games that initially had no in-game monetization, such as Conan Exiles and Hunt: Showdown, eventually added a battle pass. So, there’s a chance Concord could see a battle pass in the future.
Concord was first unveiled at Sony’s May State of Play event and garnered a mixed reception. Following its recent beta test, the game is set to launch on August 23, 2024, for PC and PS5. Are you planning to try it out? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
