It’s been a challenging period for Steam Helldivers 2 players globally in recent days. Despite hopes for improvement, the situation worsened with Helldivers 2’s delisting yesterday. However, after an emotional rollercoaster, Sony has now reversed course and made a positive decision.
The announcement originates from Sony’s official PlayStation account on X. In a recent post, Sony PlayStation revealed that the planned update for Steam and PSN integration has been scrapped.
The company also clarified that it is currently determining the most suitable path for PC players going forward, with feedback playing a crucial role in this decision-making process. Therefore, if you possess Helldivers 2, there is no longer a mandatory requirement to have a PSN account linked in order to continue playing!
Certain individuals may wonder, “Do other game developers insist on their own platform for Steam users?” The answer is yes, they do. However, when it came to Helldivers 2, Sony PlayStation initially did not mandate PSN linking upon launch.
Arrowhead chose to keep this feature optional initially, allowing players across PS5 and PC to play together seamlessly. However, on May 3, 2024, Arrowhead was compelled to make account linking mandatory.
The situation escalated when players discovered that more than 177 countries were unable to access PSN, potentially locking them out of Helldivers 2 due to Sony PlayStation’s rules. Consequently, this led to review bombing and widespread discontent, including from Arrowhead themselves.
Fortunately, players have emerged victorious, allowing everyone to return to the mission of saving Super Earth. It’s ironic that PC gamers mirrored the game’s ethos by banding together to combat this issue. This serves as a warning to companies about the potential pitfalls of relying too heavily on their platforms, even on Steam.
