Snapchat’s New Generative AI Features Could Finally Revitalize Lenses

The AI competition is intensifying daily. In response, Snapchat has accelerated its efforts by introducing a range of GenAI features that promise to revolutionize its approach to AR (Augmented Reality) content on the platform. So, what can users expect from these new features? Let’s delve into it!

Snapchat recently announced these features in an official post, not only confirming their imminent release but also demonstrating their functionality. Among the highlights is the ability for users to create custom lenses using textual prompts.

Snapchat showcased how three individuals transformed their everyday appearance into that of characters from a 1950s sci-fi film using this upcoming lens feature. Notably, the AI model powering this feature operates “in real-time on mobile devices.”

Snapchat has already introduced GenAI-powered features such as Dreams, AI Pets, Bitmoji Backgrounds, and Chat Wallpapers. The addition of AI Lenses to its lineup enhances the platform’s AI capabilities even further.

Moreover, Snapchat is expanding its GenAI Suite with the upcoming Lens Studio 5.0 release. For those unfamiliar, Lens Studio is a PC tool (Download) that enables users to create custom lenses from scratch. According to Snapchat,

These new tools enable creators to “generate custom ML models and assets to enhance their Lenses.” Snapchat has also partnered with the National Portrait Gallery of London to integrate “iconic portrait styles” into custom lens creation.

The latest Lens Studio update introduces features like Face Effects, allowing users to use text prompts or upload images to undergo significant transformations using GenAI. Additionally, Immersive ML enables users to apply face, body, and background transformations to enhance the visual appeal of images even further.

Will Snapchat Lenses Finally Regain Interest?

While Snapchat has offered plenty of quirky and visually appealing lenses like the Butterflies Lens, their novelty seems to have plateaued. However, the new GenAI Lens update promises to rejuvenate interest in Snapchat Lenses for me.

These new features suggest endless possibilities for experimentation and creativity. I hope they perform reliably and deliver results more promptly than previous features like Dream.
