Tech 2024 is kicking off with great momentum, courtesy of the highly anticipated devices scheduled for release this month (hint: Galaxy S24 series) and those unveiled at CES 2024. Among these attention-grabbing devices are the specialized hardcore gaming smartphones, with ASUS commanding a significant presence in this niche through its renowned ROG Phone lineup. Today, the company has introduced the ROG Phone 8 series, and we’ve got all the details you need to know.
ROG Phone 8 Series: Specifications and Features
Design and Display
The ROG Phone 8 and 8 Pro are equipped with a 6.78-inch Full-HD+ AMOLED panel, utilizing a Samsung E6 panel. Featuring a 165Hz refresh rate, a 720Hz touch sampling rate, and reaching up to 2,500 nits brightness under direct sunlight, this LTPO panel can dynamically adjust its refresh rate from 1-120Hz. ASUS highlights that the display has been fine-tuned in collaboration with Pixelworks to enhance color accuracy.

Powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the ROG Phone 8 offers storage options up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage and a maximum of 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM. The device’s performance is complemented by the ROG signature Rapid-Cooling Conductor design, an integral part of the advanced “GameCool 8 Thermal Design” from ASUS, effectively conducting and dispersing heat directly from the processor to the rear cover.
Cameras
The ROG Phone 8 incorporates several AI features this year, with the initial set being focused on the camera system. Collaborating with OZO Audio Technology, ASUS has introduced capabilities like Wind Noise Elimination.

The primary 50 MP camera is equipped with ASUS’s Gimbal Stabilization technology, ensuring photos and videos are free from shakes. Additionally, there’s a secondary 13 MP ultrawide lens and a 32 MP Telephoto lens, offering 3x lossless zoom and pixel-binned photos with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). The front camera is a 32 MP shooter with a 90-degree field of view.
Cameras have historically been a weak point for gaming smartphones, so it would be a pleasant surprise if the ROG Phone 8 manages to address this issue. The promising hardware suggests potential, and the ultimate verdict will depend on the effectiveness of the software processing.
Battery
The ROG Phone 8 series features a 5,500 mAh battery, supporting 65W wired charging with ASUS’ Hypercharge technology, and 15W wireless charging using the Qi standard. In contrast, the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate had a 6,000 mAh battery, with its robust battery life being a key selling point.
The Phone 8 Pro is equipped with a 341-element mini-LED display on the back, reminiscent of the displays found on Zephyrus series laptops. This display can showcase user-set animations. However, if the 8 Pro is the sole flagship gaming phone ASUS launches this year (without an Ultimate variant), the AniMe vision is considered a downgrade compared to the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate, which featured a fully-fledged PMOLED screen on the back.
