Loyalty in gaming can change in a flash — just look at the case of PlayStation and Call of Duty. Back in 2014, Activision’s popular FPS franchise signed an extensive marketing partnership with Sony, giving PlayStation consoles exclusive content and co-branded bundles for almost a decade. This naturally led players to strongly associate the brand with CoD, particularly during the PS4 era. However, after Microsoft acquired the publisher, Sony quickly pivoted, placing its bets on Battlefield 6.

The change in strategy became evident when PlayStation unveiled a brief advertisement for BF6. The ad, which included highlights from the game’s live-action trailer, ended with the line, “It All Goes Down On PS5.” Beyond the clear promotional message, this move offers PlayStation users several advantages and signals potential shifts in the console first-person shooter market.

What the PlayStation and Battlefield 6 Collaboration Brings

The collaboration between PlayStation and Battlefield 6 is designed to give PS5 players a smoother progression experience. Those subscribed to PlayStation Plus can enjoy several exclusive perks, including:

  • Additional tier skips in Battle Passes when purchasing the Battlefield Pro token.
  • Extended availability of 2XP events, allowing PS5 players to benefit from faster progression for longer.
  • Extra XP for the whole squad—including PC and Xbox players—if at least two squad members are on PlayStation.

For nearly a decade, PlayStation users have consistently enjoyed exclusive perks in most Call of Duty games. These often included special modes and missions — like Spec Ops in Modern Warfare (2019) and Zombies Onslaught in Black Ops Cold War. It now raises the question: will Battlefield 6 follow a similar route by offering PS5-exclusive content? Only time will reveal that, but it certainly seems like a plausible direction.

More than the in-game bonuses, this partnership signals a major shift in the console FPS scene — one that extends beyond sales figures and player statistics. With Call of Duty now essentially tied to the Xbox ecosystem, PlayStation needed a strong counterbalance. But this rivalry now carries extra weight, as each title represents opposing console brands, igniting a fresh phase of a mini “console war.”

Even though Xbox is gradually evolving into a broader, third-party publisher, the public perception tells a different story. At the moment, Battlefield stands with PlayStation, while Call of Duty aligns with Xbox — drawing a clear line between the two.
