OpenAI Sets the Stage for Monday Event, but No Search Engine Launch Planned

OpenAI has officially announced an event on May 13, a day before Google I/O. Earlier reports suggested OpenAI would launch its ChatGPT search engine on Monday. However, Sam Altman clarified on X that it won’t be a search engine launch, dispelling the anticipation. The event is also not scheduled for the launch of the next major AI model, GPT-5.

Altman has stated, “Not GPT-5, not a search engine, but we’ve been hard at work on some new stuff we think people will love! Feels like magic to me.” In contrast, OpenAI has announced that the company will demonstrate some updates to ChatGPT and GPT-4.

The “new stuff” might pertain to a new search product integrated within ChatGPT, resembling Perplexity rather than a full-fledged search engine like Google Search. Recently, the discovered subdomain for ChatGPT Search has shifted from “search.chatgpt.com” to “search.chatgpt.com/search“.

Regarding GPT-4 updates, OpenAI is likely to release some GPT-4 Lite models. Several model codenames have surfaced online, such as gpt-4l, gpt-4l-auto, and gpt-4-auto, found in the source code of ChatGPT’s Android app.

We’ll uncover OpenAI’s latest developments on Monday. If you’re interested, you can tune into the live stream on openai.com (visit) at 10 AM PT (10:30 PM IST). In the meantime, feel free to share your expectations for the announcement.
