Thousands of Windows systems worldwide are crashing with a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) error, causing significant disruptions for airlines, banks, supermarkets, TV broadcasters, and other businesses reliant on Windows. The problem has been traced to a faulty update from CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity provider.
The error message reads, “It looks like Windows didn’t load correctly,” prompting users to restart their PCs or access advanced repair options. Unfortunately, none of the recovery options currently allow the systems to boot normally.
The BSOD issue initially emerged in Australia, causing banks, airlines, and media channels to go offline. In the UK, Sky News has also gone offline, and several European businesses are encountering similar problems. According to The Guardian, a major railway network in the UK is experiencing widespread IT issues due to the same fault.
How to Resolve Ongoing BSOD Issue on Windows
CrowdStrike Engineering has identified the problem as related to the Falcon sensor and has reverted the changes. However, Windows machines that were already affected by the update cannot bypass the BSOD screen.
Here is the workaround provided by the Director of Overwatch at CrowdStrike to address the BSOD issue immediately.
- Boot your Windows machine into Safe Mode.
- Navigate to the following directory
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\CrowdStrike
- Locate the file named ‘C-00000291*.sys’ and remove it from the system.
- Restart your PC, and it should boot up normally.
