During Monday’s Build 2025 keynote, Microsoft announced NLWeb, an open-source project designed to convert websites into AI-driven applications. By integrating a natural language interface, it enables users to query any site using everyday English. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between traditional websites and next-gen AI assistants, making online content more adaptable for chatbots and autonomous agents.

The system leverages structured data formats like schema.org and RSS to analyze and interpret website content. Users can then query the site using any AI model of their choice. Microsoft confirms compatibility with all major AI models and vector databases. Under the hood, the platform utilizes the Model Context Protocol (MCP), effectively turning each website into an MCP server for seamless AI interactions.

Wondering how this is useful? NLWeb makes websites more interactive and enables them to become part of the “agentic web.” Early adopters of this technology include Tripadvisor, Shopify, O’Reilly Media, Common Sense Media, and others.

If you’re a developer, you can visit the NLWeb GitHub repository to explore the project. It offers core code, MCP connectors for models and vector databases, tools to format your data, a web server frontend, and a straightforward user interface.

At Build 2025, Microsoft also revealed that it’s adding native MCP support to Windows 11 to enable secure AI agents. It’s clear Microsoft is eager to stay ahead in the move toward an agentic future.
