If you’ve ever used Instagram on an iPad, you know it’s essentially just a stretched-out version of the mobile app not exactly ideal for larger displays. Fortunately, Meta is finally addressing this, and a dedicated Instagram app designed specifically for iPads is in the works.

As reported by The Information, Meta is developing an Instagram experience tailored for tablets, marking a major shift after nearly a decade of refusing to do so. Interestingly, the timing coincides with the potential TikTok ban in the U.S., which may be motivating Meta to strengthen its offerings and draw in more users.

Right now, Instagram on iPad defaults to the phone layout, resulting in awkward black borders on either side. It’s a less-than-ideal experience even Android tablets offer a better layout that utilizes the full screen, albeit with some quirks like the navigation bar shifting to the right.

Back in 2022, Instagram head Adam Mosseri was asked about the lackluster experience of using the app on iPads. At the time, he responded, “It’s still just not a big enough group of people to be a priority.” Fast forward to today, and it looks like that stance has changed likely influenced by the uncertain future of their biggest competitor, TikTok.

This isn’t the first time Meta has looked to capitalize on the looming TikTok ban. Back in January, the company unveiled Edits its answer to TikTok’s popular CapCut app. While there’s still no confirmed release date for the dedicated Instagram iPad app, its development is a welcome move for tablet users.

After years of dealing with a subpar mobile-stretched layout, iPad users can finally look forward to a smoother, more native experience. What do you think about this long-overdue update? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
