Apple is set to introduce major changes across its devices and operating systems this year. While we already know that iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and macOS 16 will adopt a visionOS-inspired design, Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 series is also expected to bring significant upgrades. Among them is the iPhone 17 Air, the slimmest model in the lineup, now revealed through leaked dummy units that confirm key design details.

Reliable leaker Sonny Dickson has shared images of these iPhone 17 dummies, showcasing the designs of Apple’s next-generation devices. The images align with previous renders, which hinted at pill-shaped camera modules across the lineup. While both the front and back reveal intriguing details, it’s the side profile that offers the best glimpse at the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air.

A side-by-side comparison of the dummy units highlights just how slim the iPhone 17 Air will be compared to the other models. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is reducing the Air’s thickness by “roughly a fifth,” making it 2mm thinner than the rest of the lineup, measuring just 5.5mm. The dummy shots make this difference clear, as the other iPhone 17 models appear noticeably thicker in comparison.

The images also hint at the display size of the iPhone 17 Air, which is expected to feature a 6.6-inch panel positioned between the 6.3-inch Pro and the 6.9-inch Pro Max. Gurman suggests that Apple may have opted for a slightly larger display to mitigate the risk of bending on such a thin device.

Additionally, the dummy units confirm several design elements of the Air model, including the Camera Control button, a Dynamic Island cutout, and a single 48MP rear camera, similar to the iPhone 16e.

Gurman also suggests that the iPhone 17 Air may be priced at “roughly $900.” To justify this price, it is expected to feature some Pro-level upgrades, including a 120Hz ProMotion display. However, it will also include some lower-end components, such as the standard Apple A19 chip, rather than the A19 Pro found in the higher-end models.

A Port-Free iPhone?

The Bloomberg report also highlights Apple’s “ambitious” vision for future iPhones, suggesting plans to make the iPhone Air lineup completely wireless, eliminating all ports. This would mean users would have to rely solely on wireless charging and iCloud for data transfers.

However, it seems Apple won’t take that step just yet with the iPhone 17 Air. The device is expected to retain its USB-C port, likely due to concerns over EU regulations. According to Apple executives, the company may revisit the idea of a portless iPhone in the future if the Air model gains significant traction.

Gurman also notes that Apple’s push for a slimmer iPhone will play a crucial role in the development of a potential foldable iPhone. In many ways, the design, battery, and display advancements of the iPhone 17 Air could directly contribute to Apple’s foldable device, which is rumored to debut in 2026. This foldable iPhone may also serve as a tribute to the iPhone’s 20th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in Apple’s history.
