On Saturday, TikTok went offline in the U.S. following the enforcement of the ban, and other ByteDance-owned apps like the widely used editing tool CapCut also began vanishing from the App Store and Google Play Store. While TikTok has managed to evade the ban for now, the fate of its sister apps remains uncertain. Sensing an opportunity, Meta launched its own video editing app, Edits, on Sunday afternoon.

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, unveiled the new app in a Threads post, describing Edits as “more than a video editing app it’s a full suite of creative tools.” The app is designed with creators in mind, offering a range of features such as a dedicated tab to store creative inspirations and the ability to share video drafts with friends and collaborators.

At launch, the app will be completely free and allow users to export videos without any watermark, as highlighted in its App Store description. Additionally, creators can post their edited videos directly to Instagram in 1080p resolution and access detailed performance insights.

Mosseri also noted in his post that Edits will officially launch next month, with the iOS version arriving first, followed by an Android release at a later date. In the meantime, users can already preorder the app from Apple’s App Store.

It’s clear that Meta aimed to capitalize on the uncertainty surrounding CapCut, knowing many users would soon be looking for a reliable alternative. While it doesn’t seem like Edits was developed overnight, the timing of its announcement strongly suggests Meta waited for the right moment once the ByteDance ban began taking effect. But what’s your take on Edits? Are you interested in giving it a try once it officially launches? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
