Following the release of GPT-4, anticipation has been high for OpenAI’s next model, GPT-5. Despite over a year passing since GPT-4’s debut, OpenAI has remained quiet about GPT-5’s release date. However, a recent report from Business Insider suggests that GPT-5 could launch this summer.
According to the report, two anonymous sources within OpenAI, familiar with the development, revealed that some enterprise customers have already tested the GPT-5 model. The report also mentions that a CEO who demoed GPT-5 described it as “materially better” than GPT-4 and “really good.”
Furthermore, the report states that OpenAI is working on AI agents that would use GPT-5 to perform tasks based on user prompts. This functionality, which many are eagerly anticipating, has already seen some development with projects utilizing GPT-4. Tools like Open Interpreter and Code Interpreter API have showcased impressive demos, indicating exciting possibilities with GPT-5.
Additionally, the report notes that OpenAI has not yet established a release date for GPT-5. The company is currently in the process of training the GPT-5 model. Following this, the model will undergo the “red teaming” process to assess safety, bias, and potential harm risks, which could potentially lead to further delays in the timeline.
In a recent interview on Lex Fridman’s podcast, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, was asked about the release of GPT-5. Altman candidly replied, “I don’t know,” and he also revealed that OpenAI intends to unveil an “amazing new model this year,” although the company has not yet settled on a name for it.
Altman also indicated that OpenAI has many different releases planned for the coming months, which he believes will be very impressive. He stated, “I know we have a lot of other important things to release first.“
Recently, there have been reports suggesting that OpenAI might release an intermediate GPT-4.5 model, indicating that the company may be preparing for its launch. Additionally, OpenAI recently announced Sora, an impressive text-to-video AI model, which is expected to be released in the coming months as per reports. With Anthropic’s Claude 3 Opus model already being praised as superior to GPT-4, it’s likely that OpenAI is aiming to release GPT-5 as soon as possible to stay competitive.
