From Google Messages to Contacts, and Google’s Dialer app, Google’s communication suite has seen significant enhancements and new features over time. Recently, Google introduced per-contact ringtones in Contacts, and it seems the tech giant may soon integrate a lookup feature in the Google Phone app. Here’s what you should know.
Google app enthusiast AssembleDebug first discovered the “Lookup” feature by enabling a flag in Google Phone’s version 127.0.620688474. This feature appears when you tap on an unknown number in your recent call history.
While the name may imply that Google is developing a Truecaller-like caller ID lookup feature, that is not the situation. When you tap the Lookup icon, it opens your default browser and searches for the number on the web (a rather basic functionality), which implies the feature will help Find businesses linked to the number rather than individuals.
The feature is currently live in Japan as part of the March feature drop but could be released globally soon. AssembleDebug also spotted a minor UI change in the dialer app, which is not particularly significant or noteworthy.
It would be ideal if the feature were similar to Truecaller, as Google has done some work on user profiles via RCS and connected apps. Hopefully, Google will eventually integrate a Truecaller-like caller ID feature into the Google Phone app.
