For the first time, Google is hosting an Android Show: I/O Edition ahead of the official Google I/O event, focusing entirely on Material 3 Expressive one of the most significant design overhauls in years, set to arrive on Pixel devices with Android 16 later this year.
Previously seen in leaks, Material 3 Expressive is now official. The design language centers around emotion, offering more fluid, playful interactions across the UI. It features springy animations, subtle background blur for added depth, responsive components, and bold, expressive typography.
Google highlighted several interactive changes in Material 3 Expressive. For instance, when you dismiss a notification, nearby ones will subtly shift in response to your swipe, and a haptic vibration kicks in as the dismissed card snaps away adding a tactile sense of satisfaction. UI elements across the OS are also being designed to react more naturally to user behavior.
In addition to animation and responsiveness, the dynamic color system is being refined and will roll out across all Google apps in the coming months. Android 16’s Quick Settings are also being revamped, allowing users to fit more tiles on a single page finally addressing a long-standing limitation. Another major addition is Live Updates, which will let users track things like deliveries and real-time progress directly on the lock screen, similar to iOS.
These upgrades aren’t just limited to Pixel phones Wear OS is also getting the Material 3 Expressive treatment. Expect more vibrant visuals, smoother animations, and adaptive shape-morphing elements that adjust to different screen sizes. Wear OS 6 will introduce dynamic color theming, glanceable buttons that curve with the display, and a refined layout that maximizes space. On top of the visual improvements, Google promises up to a 10% boost in battery life, making the update both stylish and practical.
As always, Pixel smartphones and watches will be the first to get a taste of these exciting new features. What was expected to be a routine mid-cycle update is now turning into one of the most significant changes Android has ever seen.
