After a considerable wait, Google has released Android 15 Developer Preview 1 for Pixel devices. Pixel owners can install it immediately; we tested it on the Pixel 7 Pro at the Azmotech office, solidifying the Android 15 codename as “Vanilla Ice Cream.” Speculations about this codename circulated online since last year, but this confirmation is now official. Google shared a screenshot of Android Gradle plugin code on its developer website, further affirming the Android 15 codename.
Google continues its tradition of dessert-themed “code” names for Android versions. Android 14 is codenamed “Upside Down Cake,” following Android 13, which was named “Tiramisu.”
In the past, Google not only used dessert names as codenames but also officially tied them to Android version numbers. For instance, Android 8 was known as Oreo, and Android 9 as Pie. However, with Android 10, Google shifted away from dessert-themed names, simply referring to it as “Q.” Nonetheless, internally, Google still used the dessert-themed name “Quince Tart” for Android 10. Since then, these dessert monikers have solely served as internal codenames.
Regarding Android 15 features, we’ve compiled a wishlist for your perusal. However, this is merely the beginning with DP 1. Following the typical pattern of Android OS releases, anticipate DP 2, followed by two Beta releases and two Platform Stability releases, culminating in the final stable release.
What are your thoughts on the newly unveiled Android 15 codename? Should Google reintroduce its playful, delectable dessert-themed naming convention officially? Share your opinions in the comments section below!
