There’s no denying that AI was the highlight of Google’s I/O 2024 Developer Conference. From AI Search Overviews and Gemini 1.5 Flash to Imagen 3, a variety of new features were unveiled. One announcement that might be overlooked by many is the integration of Gemini Nano into the Chrome Desktop client.
Jon Dahlke, Director of Product Management for Google Chrome, shared this news at the event. The integration is set to arrive in an upcoming version of Google Chrome, likely version 126. Gemini Nano has been available since the launch of the Pixel 8 series, with the Pixel 8 Pro initially offering access to it.
Subsequently, not only the standard Pixel 8 but also the Samsung Galaxy S24 series received Gemini Nano. Gemini Nano is a lighter LLM model designed for executing on-device tasks.
Now, with its integration into Chrome’s Desktop app, numerous AI capabilities will become accessible to its users. This enhancement will significantly improve Chrome’s web-based AI capabilities, akin to what Copilot is to Microsoft Edge. The primary advantage will be the ability to execute tasks on-device, eliminating the need to rely on external servers.
Dahlke explains:
“We have started to engage with other browsers and will be opening up an early preview program for developers. With webGPU, WASM, and Gemini built into Chrome, we believe the web IS AI-ready.”
Furthermore, Google is integrating Gemini AI into Gmail to simplify email sorting and data extraction from emails. At MWC 24 earlier this year, Google Messages also integrated Gemini AI. Given Google’s gradual integration of AI into its products and services, this development is not surprising.
Ultimately, the value of this AI evolution that Google is striving to achieve will depend on individual perspectives. Personally, I’d prefer to see more substantial evidence supporting these announcements. Simply adding AI to everything doesn’t convince me.
