Since the original Star Wars hit theaters, we’ve all imagined a future where holograms let us talk to people through their 3D models. Now, Google is bringing that sci-fi dream to life with Google Beam.

At Google I/O 2025, the search giant introduced Google Beam, a feature that enables 3D video calls using a “state-of-the-art AI volumetric video model,” combined with a light field display and powered by Google Cloud. This technology lets the other person appear in full 3D from any angle you view them.

Originally unveiled as Project Starline in 2021, the technology has now been renamed Google Beam to reflect its shift from specialized hardware to advanced AI models. While Beam still relies on hardware using six cameras to capture the subject from various angles the AI then combines these streams into a seamless, coherent 3D representation.

That’s not all Google can stream all this 3D data at 60 frames per second. The company also revealed a partnership with HP to bring this futuristic technology to life. The first Google Beam device is expected to be available for early adopters by the end of this year. However, details on the price and any specific hardware requirements have yet to be announced.

As a Star Wars fan, I’m seriously excited about this! While it’s not quite the hologram magic from the movies yet, it’s definitely moving us closer. Before long, we might even be streaming a full 3D plan of the Death Star with friends.
