Gemini in Messages evokes memories of the good old Google Allo days.

Google Messages has been consistently improving, and the upcoming integration of Gemini is especially promising. For those unfamiliar, Gemini is Google’s AI assistant, now being integrated across Android and its suite of apps. However, seeing Gemini in Google Messages brings back memories of Google Allo.

For those who may not know, Google Allo was a messaging application launched in September 2016. Prior to the system-wide rollout of Google Assistant on Android, it was initially previewed on Google Allo, making it a unique messaging platform.

During its time in Allo, Google Assistant underwent significant advancements. Google introduced features where the Assistant could remember user inputs and engage in more personalized conversations. Additionally, it played a pivotal role in bringing smart replies to Android.

Following its typical pattern, Google discontinued Allo in 2019, which didn’t come as a surprise to users given the abundance of messaging platforms available. While Allo couldn’t rival Gemini, it raises questions about the potential growth of Google Assistant and the messaging platform had Allo continued. Interestingly, Gemini even incorporates the same “Thumbs up, thumbs down” feedback reactions as Allo did.

As Gemini prepares to join Google Messages, it seems like Google is completing a cycle following the discontinuation of Allo. Beyond its generative AI capabilities, Gemini offers features aimed at simplifying users’ lives through extensions. Similarly, Google Assistant in Allo served a similar purpose, although it operated independently.

According to the user AssembleDebug, who recently activated Gemini by enabling certain flags, the AI will function similarly to the Google app and its web counterpart. Just like these versions, Gemini in Messages will also integrate extensions (such as Google Workspace, Maps, Flights, and others), streamlining the process for users to share content with their contacts seamlessly.

The user also inquired about code suggestions, which proved successful. However, it appears that Gemini currently cannot process images. Nonetheless, image generation appears to be functioning properly.

I’m not entirely sure of Google’s motive behind integrating Gemini into Messages. It could be to encourage more usage of RCS or to explore other potential avenues. Nevertheless, my nostalgia for Google Allo remains strong. I just hope Google handles the integration of Gemini into Google Messages without compromising either platform.
