Enhanced Security for WhatsApp Calls: Here’s What’s Changing

Calling on WhatsApp is set to become more secure with the introduction of a new feature by the Meta-owned messaging platform. The purpose of this feature is to safeguard users’ IP addresses while making calls on WhatsApp. Let’s delve into the details below.

WhatsApp’s Feature: “Protect IP Address in Calls”

WhatsApp’s new feature, “Protect IP Address in Calls,” reroutes calls through WhatsApp servers, concealing users’ IP addresses during the call. Meta highlights that “this feature adds an extra layer of privacy and security, especially for users highly concerned about their privacy.

Additionally, calls on WhatsApp will continue to be end-to-end encrypted, ensuring that even WhatsApp itself cannot eavesdrop on the conversations. This new feature aligns with the approach taken by iOS 15, which introduced the ability to hide your IP address through Safari settings on iPhones.

To hide your IP address on WhatsApp calls, navigate to the Privacy settings within the app and select the Advanced option. From there, you can switch the “Preserve IP address in calls” option on or off. It’s important to note that enabling this setting may result in reduced call quality.

This recent privacy feature complements the recent addition of the ‘Silence Unknown Callers‘ feature, where WhatsApp uses a specialized protocol to deliver muted call notifications for unknown callers. Once activated, you won’t receive notifications for calls from unfamiliar numbers, potentially preventing spam calls. Nevertheless, these calls will be recorded and available for your later review. What are your thoughts on this new WhatsApp privacy feature? Do you find it useful? Share your opinions in the comments below.
