The streak of layoffs continues, this time affecting EA. The company has announced a significant wave of layoffs. However, during the news announcement on Wednesday, the company also confirmed removing certain games from their current plans.
As per a statement by EA, corroborated by a VGC news report, the company has canceled Respawn’s first-person Star Wars shooter, which was previously in development. Peter Hirschman, a LucasArts veteran and co-creator of Medal of Honor, was leading the project’s development.
EA Cancels Respawn’s Star Wars Shooter: Why?
CEO Andrew Wilson delivered the news to staff, citing the company’s response to the “rapidly evolving industry landscape and shifting player demands.” Following the decision to cut nearly 700 jobs across the company, Laura Miele, president of EA Entertainment, disclosed that Respawn would prioritize the Jedi and Apex Legends series following an evaluation. Laura elaborated, stating…
“Respawn’s unparalleled talent for engaging players and crafting extraordinary gaming adventures stands unmatched in the entertainment industry. Upon reviewing Respawn’s portfolio in recent months, it’s evident that our players are most enthusiastic about the Jedi and Respawn’s extensive collection of proprietary franchises.”
In elaborating, she clarified that EA has opted to shift focus away from the initial stages of development for a Star Wars FPS Action game. Presently, the emphasis and resources will be directed towards fresh endeavours rooted in EA-owned franchises, alongside continued support for current titles. Laura concluded her statement by stating:
“It’s never easy to step back from a project, and this choice doesn’t diminish the team’s skill, dedication, or enthusiasm for the game. Delivering fans the next chapters of the beloved franchises they crave epitomizes blockbuster storytelling and remains our paramount objective.”
At Ocala Comic Con last September, actor Cameron Monaghan mentioned his involvement in a third Jedi game. Currently, it appears EA is granting Respawn the opportunity to concentrate extensively on both Apex Legends and the Jedi series. With the recent highly new update to Apex Legends, it seems EA is prioritizing maintaining the quality of its existing games before delving into new projects.
