Many users have been requesting that ChatGPT be able to discuss any topic freely, and OpenAI appears to be responding. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on X that starting in December, erotica will be permitted on ChatGPT for verified adult users. Altman explained that the company is easing some rules following the principle of “treat adult users like adults.”
Altman noted that ChatGPT was previously made “quite restrictive” due to concerns about users’ mental health issues. Recent months have seen numerous self-harm incidents in the media connected to ChatGPT use. To address this, OpenAI implemented parental controls to ensure a safe and age-appropriate experience.

Altman now states, “we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.”
Additionally, a new ChatGPT version is planned with a personality similar to GPT-4o. Unlike the current GPT-5, which can feel somewhat distant, the update will offer human-like responses resembling a friend. Previously, OpenAI reinstated GPT-4o for paid users after receiving community criticism.
Last month, GPT-4o users were frustrated as ChatGPT automatically switched to GPT-5 during conversations on sensitive or emotional topics. The upcoming update aims to resolve this problem.
