Android offers plenty of AI assistant options, from the default Gemini app, which replaced Google Assistant, to other popular choices like Perplexity and ChatGPT. While ChatGPT was already a powerful tool, one key limitation was the inability to set it as the default assistant. That has now changed with a recent update.

With the latest beta update (version 1.2025.070), ChatGPT can now be selected as Android’s default voice assistant. The “Default digital assistant app” page in the Settings app now lists ChatGPT as an option simply select it to make it your go-to assistant.

You can also assign the long-press power button shortcut to ChatGPT for quick access. However, this feature may not be available to all beta users just yet despite using the latest beta version, we couldn’t find the option in the settings. Additionally, the overlay bubble still needs refinement, as its animations fall short compared to Gemini and Perplexity.

That said, the power button shortcut isn’t the only way to summon ChatGPT on Android. The app recently introduced a Quick Settings tile for easy access. Pixel users can also activate ChatGPT using the bottom swipe gesture. These shortcuts make it even more convenient for frequent users.
